Baker to Cedar City
After another good breakfast we said our goodbyes to The Silver Jack Inn and Lectrolux Cafe ready to head toward Cedar City, Utah, and Cedar Breaks National Monument. But first, on the suggestion of a local, we drove back toward Great Basin Park to see another bit of artwork we missed yesterday: an old car with an unusual driver.

We found a couple more we missed yesterday...

Our drive was quite beautiful... vast empty landscapes ringed by mountains with intriguing geological formations. Another cafe guest this morning had suggested that we stop at Frisco, a ghost town we passed along the way. We would probably have missed it had we not been looking for the historical marker. Frisco was a short lived silver mining town in the late 1800's. We first explored the old cemetery. Most of the graves were children under three years old... a few older children 11 or12 and only four adults. What a tough life that must have been! Ed was particularly touched by the inscription on the gravestone for Henry J. Barrett who lived from January 31, 1883 to January 19, 1884... "The selfsame hand from whence twas given has taken back our babe to heaven"
We explored the area where the smelting must have taken place with old rusted machinery, beehive kilns and the ruins of old stone buildings.
We checked into our little airbnb apartment in Cedar City mid-afternoon, then took a quick drive up to Cedar Breaks National Monument. Though today's weather was challenging with cloudy skies and even a bit of snow it was quite stunning! Tomorrow's weather is predicted to be considerably better. We have two hikes in mind for tomorrow. Again we will be over 10,000 feet above sea level so we will see how we do. Hopefully we will have some good photos to share.
Our simple little airbnb apartment feels like a palace after the Silver Jack Inn, but, unfortunately, tonight we have no internet at all. Out host says he is working on it. We shall see...
Morning update... We are using our "hot spot" and it works amazingly well. We may have to call Verizon, though, to see if our plan is big enough to cover such indulgences! Skies are clear! Weather looks perfect! We are off to Cedar Breaks...
I found the inscription on the gravestone ("The selfsame hand from whence twas given has taken back our babe to heaven") to be quite special, too, and passed it along to my friend who recently lost her little girl in a tragic car accident. Angela said "it's beautiful and means a lot" to her.
ReplyDeleteI just saw this comment... That is so sweet of you to share the inscription with someone to whom it has such a deep meaning.
